On 7 October, the University of La Laguna (ULL) held an event for final-year students on its degree in Agricultural and Rural Engineering, introducing these future professionals to employment opportunities in the primary sector. Clúster Agrotech Canarias and three of its member companies took part: Tecnofly Canarias, CANARAGUA and Grupo Félix Santiago Melián.
During the event, José Luis Sújar, manager of Clúster Agrotech Canarias, introduced students to the archipelago’s agrotechnology ecosystem, explaining how the adoption of new technologies is broadening career development opportunities in agriculture.
His presentation focused on the diversity of companies and organisations within this ecosystem and the opportunities offered by areas such as digitalisation, precision agriculture, automation and smart water management.
He also stressed the importance of using work placements to experience different professional settings, explore their interests and discover the possibilities offered by a sector undergoing transformation.
Companies introduce students to their work
Following the Clúster’s presentation, representatives of Tecnofly Canarias, CANARAGUA and Grupo Félix Santiago Melián shared their experiences and explained their activities in their respective fields.
Their presentations gave students specific examples of how technology, resource management and innovation are applied in the primary sector, highlighting some of the skills and professional roles associated with these activities.
The Canary Islands Chair in Agritourism and Wine Tourism, promoted by the Canary Islands Institute of Agri-food Quality (ICCA) and the University of La Laguna, also took part, offering a complementary perspective on career opportunities connected with the territory and agricultural activity.
Connecting university talent and business
The event, coordinated by Noelia Cruz Pérez, the lecturer responsible for the Work Placements module, brought students into contact with different organisations and companies at a key stage in their academic training.
For Clúster Agrotech Canarias, initiatives of this kind form part of its work to connect companies, knowledge centres and future professionals, helping to raise awareness of the range of opportunities available in the primary sector.
The event showed that agriculture in the Canary Islands offers an increasingly broad range of career opportunities, combining agronomic knowledge with technology, innovation and new approaches to resource management.
