The University of La Laguna (ULL) and Clúster Agrotech Canarias have signed a general collaboration protocol to promote joint research, training and knowledge transfer activities, with the aim of bringing scientific and technological capabilities closer to the archipelago’s primary sector.
The agreement was signed by the Rector of ULL, Francisco García Rodríguez, and the President of Clúster Agrotech Canarias, Federico Cuyás Redondo, at a ceremony held at the university’s Rectorate. Also present at the signing were the Canary Islands Government’s Deputy Minister for the Primary Sector, Eduardo García Cabello, and the General Coordinator of the Canary Islands Chair in Agritourism and Wine Tourism, Gabriel Santos García.
The protocol establishes a renewable two-year framework for cooperation to develop initiatives connecting university research with the needs of businesses and the agricultural sector.
Bringing research closer to the needs of farming
One of the agreement’s main objectives is to consolidate a lasting relationship between academia, business and production, facilitating knowledge exchange and identifying opportunities to develop solutions tailored to the challenges facing farming in the Canary Islands.
The collaboration includes participation in innovation programmes, training projects, entrepreneurship initiatives and scientific and technological transfer activities.
The Canary Islands Chair in Agritourism and Wine Tourism, promoted by the Canary Islands Institute of Agri-food Quality (ICCA) and ULL, will play a prominent role in this cooperation, although the agreement is also open to other university bodies.
Potential participants include the Agricultural Engineering Section of the Higher Polytechnic School of Engineering, research groups, university institutes and other specialist chairs.
A partnership to strengthen the Agrotech ecosystem
The agreement also creates opportunities for collaboration in areas such as data analysis and digitalisation. In this regard, ULL has noted that preliminary discussions are under way with the Cajasiete Chair in Big Data, Open Data and Blockchain to explore joint projects.
For Clúster Agrotech Canarias, this partnership reinforces its work to connect companies, the primary sector and knowledge centres, helping research and technological capabilities to address the territory’s real needs.
The collaboration with the University of La Laguna thus establishes a new avenue for advancing joint projects, encouraging specialist training and transferring knowledge to the Canary Islands’ productive sector.
